ANZA3 v Viking at Fernvale, Saturday 16 August 08
Scorecard
A match report from the
Thirds.....so we must have won. Indeed that is the
case with the Fernvale hoodoo finally broken and the
3rd win in a row. Lost the toss and put into bat.
Joiner opening with Rob Ashley as the big pinch
hitting tactical weapon (rationalising a shortage of
batsmen available for selection) but the big fella
did an admirable job with one big 6 but was out for
11. He did outlast his partner though who was timing
it nicely but played an upish straight drive out of
the middle only to be juggled 5 times but
held.....out for 6. Harmeet, and Davies both got
starts but were out cheaply before the rain came in
grand style with thunder and lightening in over 13
with the score on 69 (thanks to an eventful 22 from
Dhruv). The Viking boys managed to get the covers on
in a fashion. After the rain stopped there was a bit
of water to be swept away and sand to be spread on
the bowlers run up areas then play resumed but with
the match reduced to 26 overs per side.
Unfortunately Dhruv was out almost straight away
with a misqueued pull shot and was quickly followed
by Wright and Gal both victims of low bounce due to
the water that got into the pitch. However, Flambo
Howarth steadied the ship with a handy 18 and
towards the end James Howlett ("can you bat?", "yeah
I can nudge it around a bit") did well to push to
the gaps and in fact "nudged" one over the rope for
six....ending the innings on 126.
First over in the field the
Viking batsmen immediately signalled their desire to
run each other out with a mix up but we just missed
taking it cleanly, then 2 balls later they went
again, this time to mid wicket where Joiner
collected and underarmed into bowler Gal for an easy
run-out with both batsmen at the keepers end. Then
Flambo bowled beautifully in a spell of 5 overs
yielding 1/14. From the other end James Howlett came
on in over 9 with immediate success when the batsman
pulled straight to Joiner at mid wicket who took the
catch. The next Viking batsman came out swinging and
started to do some scoreboard damage with a few
boundaries and the momentum swinging back in favour
of the batting side by over 13....good time for
drinks!
We resumed with Soota (3/20) and Render
(3/20)working in tandum and the latter had immediate
success bagging the danger man who hit out only to
find the "safe" hands of Mike Gal lurking at long
on.....great catch. From the other end Dhruv bowled
a cracking 6 over spell taking the next couple of
wickets and really giving it a rip. Soota and Render
were also well supported in the field with good
catches taken by Davies and Sahney whilst Glenn
Wright made a good stumping off Render. The last
pair put up some resistance to get to 101 by over 23
and the end of Soota's spell. Enter Ashley with the
intent of the big yorker knocking over the
tailenders and sure enough in his first over a full
length ball beat the batsman and the umpire obliged
with an LBW decision. All out for 104......9 points.
