 Match Report ANZA1 v Deutsche Bank (12/10/08)
ANZA1 v Deutsche Bank at Turf City B, Sunday 12 October 08

Scorecard

It was a new look ANZA2s team that turned out for our opening 20/20 KO match against Deutsche Bank at TCB. The old faces (and bodies) of Tilbrook, Hanspal, Christensen, Leavey & West were joined by the relative youth of Burgess, Kishore, Howarth & McNicholas. (Sorry Rob & Gav - you guys will get a mention further down the page). Donning the whites for the opposition were ANZA turncoats Kev & Rajesh.

If you assumed we lost the toss you'd be correct but we still got to bat first after Rajesh put us in. Benny & Gav Hitz opened up at a solid run-a-ball pace despite some tight bowling. There were plenty of quick singles taken but both batsmen were also able to find the boundaries. Gav was unlucky to be given out for 13 caught behind off one that appeared to miss the edge - 1 for 30 off 5. Juzzy tried to keep the run rate up but skied one the following over and Westy went 2 runs later.Kenny joined Ben with the score at 3/37 and they played it safe for a few overs before Kenny upped the attack. His first six went into orbit, the next ball landed on the road but unfortunately he fell to a Rajesh inswinger in the next over for 15 (off 10). Rob and Ben kept it ticking over with some clever running and nice placement. The boundaries were well defended but there were runs coming from every ball. The pair put on a valuable 20 off just 2.5 overs aided by a maximum from Ben before he fell for a classy 39 from 32 balls. Five for 80 off 12. Rob (21) and Mark (23) added a very valuable 37 from the next 4 overs -Rob dispatching their medium pacer onto TCA and Mark finding the straight boundary. A 140+ total looked possible but both fell in quick succession and Clive, Andy & Phil got us to 131 off our 20 overs.

DB's innings started out in a similar fashion with Kev & their other opener taking 20 off the first 4 overs. A change brought about immediate success when Westy bowled their opener in his first over. However the #3 looked comfortable from the outset and he & Kev accelerated the run rate past 6-an-over at the half-way mark. We needed a breakthrough and Westy was again the man as he disrupted their first drop's castle. Ben then chimed in next over with another victim bowled and when Mark bowled Kev for 33 two overs later the pendulum started to swing. DB were 4/79 off 13 and with big-hitting Rajesh now at the crease they were still in with a chance. That chance was snuffed out by Amar two overs later. He had both batsmen immediately troubled by his loopy leggies. Their #6 got a life after a tough catch went down at mid-off but next ball Rajesh sent one down the throat of Ben at cow corner. The good guys were now in control. A procession then followed as Andy Howarth snapped up a low c&b from the very next ball and got the new man to sky one to Westy at mid-on off his following over - 7/97 in the 18th and DB were toast! Amar got another well-deserved wicket from his last ball as their tail-ender tried to whip a half-volley through leg only to be beaten by the turn and clean bowled. Andy claimed his third wicket (and our 6th 'bowled') in the last over and DB finished on 9 for 110. ANZA win by 21 runs. Great effort guys!

ANZA 9/131 - Ben Burgess 39, Mark Christensen 23, Rob Ashley 21
DB 9/110 - Andy Howarth 3/19 off 4, Amar Hanspal 2/12 off 3, David West 2/16 off 4

Our next KO match is scheduled for 1pm on 25th Oct, venue TBA
