ANZA Seconds vs Deutsche Bank Match Report

Scorecard

Another scorching day at Turf City, another opposition captain calls correctly and once again Anza fields first in the heat.

Kev (wearing an Anza shirt, but the umpire declined to give us 5 penalty runs for each one he scored)and big Craig opened up for DB and unfortunately a rash of loose balls saw them put on 65 from the first 9 overs without too much effort. However Craig started to loosen up and Clive immediately snaffled him with a skier caught by keeper Koushik. Soon after Kev got a rough caught behind decision giving Clive the double breakthrough and then tight bowling by Rob Ashley, Phil Render and Westy pulled things back nicely. Westy picked up a direct hit runout and a double breakthrough and after 28 overs DB was 101 for 5. However DB then decided to cut loose and the next 10 overs went for 99 runs, despite Westy conceding just 23 from his 4 of them. The openers Clive and Vinod then returned to take a wicket each and a final runout saw DB finish with 202 from 38.4 overs.
Clive 3-39 from 7
Rob 0-17 from 8
Phil 0-30 from 8
Westy 4-28 from 8 (and 2 catches and a run out)

Koushik and Corbon opened up the reply, Koush putting big Craig's first ball through square leg for 4. However Craig struck back bowling full and straight and collected two wickets in his second over. Eventually Corbon got down to face him, hit him for 4 once and he scarpered from the bowling crease quick as a flash. Much teasing ensued through the rest of the day, and the ride home. Unfortunately their other opening bowler bowled a good line and length and Ben Dunn edged an outswinger to Craig at first slip who used his chest, belly and then thighs to hold it, and then Matt Smith was unfortunate enough to hit the ground when driving at the ball and be sent back to the dressing room by the umpire. At that stage Anza was 4-41 after 8, quite a proportion of that score coming from extras.

Westy arrived and together with Corbon settled things while keeping the scoreboard moving along until on 17 overs Corbon played a tired shot straight to Kev in close to be out with the score on 77. I didn't see much of the next half hour lying down with a wet towel over my head but a succession of wickets fell quickly, big Craig coming back with another 2 and Anza lost 5-11 in 6 and a bit overs to be 88 for 9. Rob then hit out a bit, supported by Phil Render and the fielders (4 dropped catches) before Phil was caught with a short bat (borrowed from Westy) taking a long run and we were all out for 108. A win to DB by 94 runs, comprehensively outplaying us. Some good to adequate performances both batting and bowling but not enough support in either from the rest of the team.
Corbon 28
Westy 19
Rob 14*

Westy undisputedly our man of match with 4-28, 2 catches, a direct hit run out and 19 runs.
