Following a disappointing start to the season the previous week the first team put that behind them to face the SCC Cougars (otherwise known as the SCC second team). Winning the toss (for a change) and having only 6 players at the ground meant it was an easy choice to bat first. Starting briskly ANZA managed to get to 49-2 in 8.2 overs for the loss of openers Kennie Kishore and Kevin Robertson. Unfortunately as is the custom we then proceeded to lose another few quick wickets and at 69-5 were looking in deep trouble. Fortunately Gavin Hitzeroth provided the backbone to the innings with a solid 50 not out, supported by some resolute defence from the lower order of Adam Seabright and Jonno Seifman. The team eventually finished on 160 all out, having managed to play almost the entire 50-over allotment.

After lunch Matthew Murphy and David Jaquier opened the bowling and managed to keep the run rate under control before Dave took 3 quick wickets to put us on the front foot. In doing so, however, a caught and bowled that Dave took managed to rip the nail off the middle finger of his right hand. After a short intermission play was resumed and Dave returned to bowling, but not for too long as the heavens - which had been threatening all day - soon opened. Twenty minutes of rain and the entire field became one big puddle so the captains came to a consensus to call off the game. Had the game restarted and the minimum number of overs been subsequently bowled (20) the game could have gone either way (an extra 45 or so runs were required from 6 overs with 7 wickets in hand).

Man of the match was undoubtedly Gavin for his match-saving knock of 50 not out. Without that the game would surely have ended in a result in SCC's favour before the rain came.
