ANZA1 v Kallang Colts 1 at Turf City B, Sunday 06
July 08
Scorecard
Our arrival to Turf City for the game against
Kallang Colts was greeted by blue skies and bright
sunshine, a sure sign that rain was imminent.
Kevin started the day with a great coin toss and
elected to bat. He and Ben Burgess got us off to a
solid start but scoring was tough on a slow
outfield. Kallang's attack consisted of one medium
pacer, one chucker and 5 spin bowlers, a tough
combination for quick scoring.
Ben was dismissed first, from a good delivery,
bringing Corbon Loughnan to the crease and he and
Kev had a steady partnership. When Kev was dismissed
for 27 from a dubious decision the score was 2-89
from 23 overs. Corbon and Renato Rainone played
well, Corbon making an impressive 45 and Renato 26.
The score climbed to 4-140 off 40. From there we
tried to accelerate the run rate with mixed success.
Jonno Seifman made the best effort was some great
ball striking to be not out 14, as we were bowled
out in the 49th over for 177, a competitive score
under the conditions.
The start of the second innings was delayed when Kev
realised we had an illegal ball, and Dave Jacquier
and Jonno made a mad rush to go retrieve another
one. Meanwhile the rest of us hoed into some of
Sharlene's delicious lamb sandwiches.
Maybe it was the extra break time, the sandwiches,
or even Kev's inspirational speech (probably not the
speech), but we started the second innings on fire.
Tim May opened up from the grandstand end and bowled
with tremendous line and length, while at the other
end DJ wreaked havoc with his mixture of wides, no
balls, longhops and unplayables. After 5 overs we
had them 5-38, with Tim and DJ having 2 wickets
each, and a run out claiming the other.
After 17 overs we were cruising to a comfortable
victory with Tim bowling out his 10 overs and Renato
chipping in with a very tight spell. At this point
things took a rapid turn for the worse, with the
clouds getting very dark and the rumble of thunder
drowning out the buzz of the remote controlled cars
we started to relax. The combination of some
sensible batting, poor fielding and dubious
officiating saw us turn certain victory into a close
contest.
While I don't think it is fair to name names as far
as the dropped catches go, I'm sure initials are
fine (GH, RR, KK, BB). With defeat looming Kevin
opted for spin from each end. With himself and
Corbon bowling in tandem we started to get things
back on track. The crucial breakthrough came in the
39th over with Renato taking a great catch on the
boundary line off Kevin's leg spin bowling. The next
two wickets fell quickly and we secured a 27 run
victory, which was hailed by a combined team sigh of
relief.
