 Match Report ANZA1 v CSC1 (20/07/08)
ANZA1 v CSC1 at Turf City B, Sunday 20 July 08

Scorecard

With a thrilling win against the SCC Cougars last week, the ANZA lads were keen to make amends for their comprehensive defeat against CSC earlier in the season and make it four wins in a row. Talented opposition, the sun shining strongly over the lush Turf City outfield, and Captain Kev winning the toss and electing to bat, were all conducive elements for a terrific game of cricket.

Wides got us off the mark with the first ball, however, we were soon 1-1 with DJ trying to swat a fly-ball off Saad, CSCs fast bowler. Wides and Ben Burgess kept the scoreboard ticking, but with Corbon, Renato and Dhruv back in the club-tent scoring just two, four and twelve respectively, ANZAs innings looked very vulnerable at 4 for 52.

Ben ‘I can bowl’ Burgess looked set again for a big score when a top-spinner or a misplaced grain of sand on a good length had him departing for a well compiled 31. When Craig Richmond was brilliantly caught just inches within the rope, ANZAs inning still looked brittle at 6 for 85 from just 20 overs. Jonno Seifman provided some much needed entertainment, belting 26 off as many balls, but with his stumps cart-wheeling beyond the keeper and Kenny ‘bat me higher’ Kishore miscuing a lofted drive that was gobbled up by an outfielder wearing a cape, the score had crept to 7 for 117 off 26 overs.

The next hour proved to be ANZAs finest this season. Captain Kev showed amazing determination to anchor the innings with a gritty 36 not out off 80 balls. He was very well supported by Tim May making 14, Adam 'averages' Seabright with 15 not out, and our second top scorer Wides who made 33. And although the dismissed upper order were eyeing an early sandwich or two, ANZA batted through their allotted overs to finish 9 for 198.

With the likes of DJ and Tim May opening the bowling, chasing 198 was never going to be an easy task for the opposition. Both bowlers bowled with venom and were well supported by Ben Burgess’ safe hands and Kenny’s lightning glove work behind the stumps. And before long, CSC were 7 for 70 off 16 overs with DJ collecting 4 for 36 off ten and Tim May 3 for 33 off seven. Dhruv (1 for 10 off four) and Corbon (2 for 10 off two) killed off any chance of an ANZA like revival for the opposition, taking the last three wickets cheaply. CSC were finally dismissed for 110 runs off 29 overs.

A terrific win for the ANZA division 1 players and we’re looking for five on the trot next week.
