ANZA Firsts Start With Tense Win Oover Kallang Colts

ANZA1 scored a "down to the wire" win in the season opener against Kallang Colts. With 10 runs required in the last over, Westy (batting at number 11) casually slapped a 6 over mid wicket to swing things in ANZA's favour and Rags finished things off with a four through covers. Earlier on the team produced a great effort to have the Colts all out for 180. Things started well with classy opening bat Chetan Suryawanshi getting one from George O'Neil that lifted sharply and flew high to point where Greg Joiner pulled down a screamer. Tight bowling from both ends was the key with Steve Whitton and debutante Jye Hearps both bowling superbly. Jye had figures of 2/28 from 9 and had national side captain Chaminda Ruwan well and truly tied down with his impeccable length and accuracy. David West and Ragavan Thuriasingam (Rags) also bowled well in tandem creating pressure and wickets, with Rags finishing with 3/27 off his 10. They were backed up by superb fielding by Kevin Robertson who took three brilliant catches and was part of a great run-out. The only downer was Captain Jacquier who managed to inadvertently strain his hammy in the field. Ben Breheny (61) and Kev (39) opened and got right on top of the Colts attack for a solid opening partnership of 81 before Kev was given run-out in an oh so familiar example of Singapore umpires opting to give the fielding team the benefit of the doubt rather than the batsman. Ben batted beautifully throughout. Rags (34 no) followed his great bowling performance to avert a total middle order collapse and to hold the innings together enough to set the scene for Westy's ultimate cameo appearance.

ANZA2 batted well to score 229 off 40 overs with new boy Craig Alderson opening with 25 of 19 before he was introduced to lbw adjudication Singapore style. Peter Alexander then bludgeoned 82 from 68 balls with Darren Box playing a steady role at the other end for a classy 31 and combining for a 115 run partnership. In the field Marina2 opening bat Prabhu came out all guns blazing and slapped 75 of 47 balls to set up a successful run chase completed in 38.3 overs. Best bowling performance for ANZA was Render with 1/22 off 8 overs and Dhruv Soota with 2/38 of 8 overs. |
