Guys,
ANZA 1 started off the League season with a
crushing victory over SRC 1 at Turf City B on
Sunday.
Dave Jacquier called correctly and batted in hot
conditions. Kevin Robertson and Dave put on a 99
run opening stand in good time before Dave was
run out for 40. Duncan Shirley and Kevin then
continued the ANZA dominance with a 150 run
stand for the second wicket, before Duncan was
run out for 58 in his maiden ANZA innings. Ben
Breheny came in at the end to score a quick-fire
29 not out, including a six into the ravine that
put the score over the 300 mark.
However, the star of the day with the bat was
Kevin Robertson who carried his bat for 121 not
out. I cannot recall another batsman carrying
their bat for ANZA 1 for the full 50 overs ever.
This was a stunning innings, and even though
cramping towards the end, requiring a runner,
Kevin was his usual brilliant self in the field
later on. ANZA 1 ended their 50 overs on 4/303.
SRC came out looking for quick runs. However,
good opening spells from Mark Christensen and
Cameron Thomson helped to restrict them. Cameron
then started the rout claiming three wickets;
bowled, a smart catch at 2nd slip by Duncan, and
a well-held skier at mid-on by Steve Whitton.
Unfortunately in taking the catch, Steve split
the webbing in his hand and had to be taken to
hospital for stitches. This gave myself a chance
to witness the remainder of the SRC innings at
close range.
Gerard Sitaramayya took up the attack bowling
quickly and moving the ball around. He was
rewarded with catches from consecutive balls by
Mark Christensen around mid-on. This included a
full length dive, the impact upon the big man
landing dislodging the bails at the bowler's
end. Dave Jacquier then took two CB from Gerard,
leaving Gerard with figures of 4/30. At the
other end Dave West was his normal economical
self, tying up an end leading to frustration at
the other.
Cameron Thomson was brought in to replace Gerard
and struck with a C&B and another outfield catch
to Mark Christensen off the last ball of his
10th over, to give him a maiden 5/54. Mark
Christensen then came on to mop up the tail.
After hitting Nirmal in the head, Mark grabbed
the last wicket, to end SRC's innings at 158,
ANZA winning by 145 runs.
A fantastic all round team performance, with old
and new players making their mark. Highest marks
go to Kevin and Cameron who shone on the day.
Seconds and Thirds are on at Turf City this
Sunday, looking to emulate the Firsts start to
the season.
See you at training on Thursday night at SCC and
Saturday morning at CSC!
